Directory Submissons

Submitting your website to directories is one way to increase your search engine rankings and generate more targeted traffic.

What are web directories?

Web directories are sites that hold categorised lists of websites and allow users to browse for sites and services of their choice. Some of these sites require payment for link inclusion (e.g. Yell.com) whereas others allow free listing (e.g. dmoz.org).

There are literally thousands (if not millions) of directory sites on the internet and they are a great way of getting categorised, trusted backlinks to your site – especially if you remember co-citation.

Many sites will require manual approval of submissions and not guarantee listing, others will list regardless.

Which directories to choose?

Because of the sheer number of directory sites available it can be daunting and very time consuming just randomly submitting, therefore, Serious have devised a list of preferred directories taking into account link popularity, page rank, anchor text options, cost, age and sector coverage. Submissions frequency

Submitting your site to 150 directory sites in a weekend is not only a mammoth chore it is also less effective than spreading your submissions over a longer period of time and pacing the work load. Search engines like to see a steady continual increase of links rather than a link binge just as the campaign is launched. Serious directory submission campaigns are well structured and planned over a fixed period of time. This structuring also allows for monitoring and evaluation of link success and popularity.

Where to link to

An obvious answer would be “to your website”, however, Serious take careful consideration in choosing deep links within the site which have more optimisation for the context of the submitted link.

Top Tip

Before you submit your site to any old directory do a little research to see if they still accept links, check their pagerank score and whether they actually show up in search engine results pages (SERPs) – weeding out the bad ones will save a lot of time and energy (and money!).
