What is display advertising?
Display advertising is generally purchasing (or trading) banner or textual adverts to be displayed on screen of another website. Banners come in all shapes & sizes, and costs will depend on the specific provider’s site popularity and market placement.
Display adverts – specifically banners – are great for encouraging click throughs if the creative is eye-catching and stimulating, and the message headline is powerful and quick to absorb. Because of the way display adverts are served to the provider they do not count as an incoming link to search engines and so are not helpful for search engine placement. With that said, if they are designed well, they can provide advertising impact which you could not achieve by any other online method.
Traditionally display advertising is paid for by impression (how many times it is displayed) and for that reason it is imperative that the message and create deliver every time. For example an advert could be placed on the homepage of a site the campaign could include 10,000 impressions per month. If the provider site gets an average of 2,000 hits a day to the homepage then the advert will only be displayed for 5 days until its monthly quota runs out. Because of that you need to make sure that every impression counts.
If click throughs are not that important but the focus is more about keeping the brand in the public mind then display advertising works much more like traditional display advertising (billboards, magazines, tube cards etc).
