Social Network Marketing
Marketing on Social Networks can often be underestimated
Social network sites and User Generated Content (UGC) sites are among the top frequented sites on the internet today. For example, Facebook has just topped the 150 million members mark (as of 7th Jan 2009) and Wikipedia has over 10m articles and over 8.5m registered users. This may seem like the perfect place to advertise, however, just like blogging, the users of these sites are desensitised to advertising messages but also over-sensitive to presence of any advertising.
Once again this should not mean that these sites cannot be utilised, in fact the opposite is true. The key is in finding the right place for your message. If you have something which people will genuinely be interested in then by definition you have something interesting to say and all that is needed is to find the people who want to listen.
It also depends on what you are selling. If you are selling your brand then it is highly reasonable to have a brand specific Facebook profile and group, or on MySpace, Bebo or alike. If you run events then you can invite your friends to take part in these on Facebook. If you are consistently doing interesting activities then you can Twitter these and tell the world. Your company profile can be added to Wikipedia. You can have your own YouTube channel with videos on any subject.
The key with utilising these Social Network sites and UGC sites is to interlink them and co-cite across all of them. This ties each together and also ties your brand to similar and complimentary entities.

Top tip
Always remember why the social networks exist – it’s for community and information sharing – not advertising! If you want someone to know about your product then it has to be shared in an open, honest and totally transparent manner, relevant to the topic/context of the blog – if not then your post just becomes spam and should be deleted.
